Camping from Rome to Greece

After having a blast in Florence we hit the road again aiming for Rome. If there was one thing i wanted to visit on this trip it had to be the Colosseum! Wow! I wish you could slip back in time and watch a battle in this amazing amphitheatre. We had a tour through Ancient Roma (with the most boringiest guide ever!), a visit to the Pantheon and a stop off at the beautiful Trevi Fountain to throw a coin over our left shoulders to ensure we would come back to Rome. We also managed a quick cup of tea with the Pope after a 2.5 hour line up to get into Vatican City. After a few more sights including Circo Massimo & Santa Sabina you would think that was enough sightseeing in Rome. However, a group of us somehow ended up on the wrong train back to the campsite so after a bus and train back we ended up seeing a little bit of the countryside too!

I wish you could venture back in time!

The next day we drove to the dirty city of Naples to try a nice juicy slice of pizza and to catch a ferry to the Italian island of Capri. We took a gondola ride up to the top for some great views. We jumped back on the ferry and landed in Sorrento for the night where it was again pizza for dinner and a wander around the narrow streets. Early next morning it was back on the coach to have a guided tour Pompeii, a city/town that was buried by a volcanic eruption back in 79AD. It was amazing to see some of the plaster casts of the victims including a dog that would have been buried alive. Continuing on from Pompeii we were back on the coach and enjoying the landscapes of southern Italy. We then took an overnight ferry to one of the most highly anticipated stops on our tour, Corfu which is one of the Greek Islands!

The Corinth Canal. MASSIVE!

Finally we had 3 nights here to chill out and not have to worry about putting tents up and down! Chill out we did... well kind of! It was an action packed first day as we headed straight out on George's Boat! Our first stop off was for a couple of hours of water sports. I chose to do the banana boating and tubing whislt some went for the para sailing and wake boarding. Next we were put into the hands of George (described to us as that creepy uncle that you somehow love). That's exactly what he was! Beers & wine were cheap, crude jokes were included for free and we made stops at skinny dipping island (where most did exactly that), hanky panky island and of course we had time to play with George's noodle and balls (floating stick and volleyballs)! We were served a cracking lunch aboard the boat consisting of fresh meat, bread, chips and salad and of course George's famous Tzatziki which was accompanied by his little rhyme (jiggy jiggy - it's good for your sex life)! Everyone was pretty rowdy and after belting out our national anthems and another swim it was back to camp with everyone in high spirits after hours of sunshine and alcohol! Oh I almost forgot to mention but the weather was amazing after the morning clouds burnt off. For the next 2 days in Corfu a group of us decided to hire some cars and drive around the island looking for the ultimate beach. I was a driver and I must say it was quite fun driving on the right hand side of the road with the gear stick on the right also! I think i only strayed once onto the wrong side of the road. We had 2 little white cars and it must have been hilarious watching us as we hesitantly crept through central Corfu. Not at one stage were we 100% sure if we were actually supposed to be driving through these tiny lanes filled with restaurants and shops until we finally got the shake of an index finger and a 'NO NO NO!' which meant turn around and get out!! We finally exited the town centre and found a lovely little beach called Glifada where sunning, swimming (some with less clothes than others) and sleeping were on the cards. After a great 3 days in Corfu we finished our time off here with a traditional toga party that included some nasty oozo and drinking races which were a lot of fun.

Here he is! The sweaty man himself on the microphone encouraging everyone to get into the skinny dipping spirit! For some reason we all love George and his boat.

Life is tough with views like this

After being somewhat refreshed, well lets just say slightly more tanned we were off to Athens which had just hosted riots within its main square! Luckily for us everything had settled down by the time we arrived and there were only a few broken windows about the place. We had a tour up the Acropolis and a bus tour and free time to explore the city. As we were leaving Athens we had another 15 or so people join our group to tackle the next 3 weeks. Our bus was now 2/3rds full and I think the new kids thought we were a bit quiet as we were so tired from the last 3 weeks! A whole day on the bus to sleep was just what we needed before a one night stop over in Kavala where an introductory game of Kings and a fire on the beach took place.

The new group was bonding and it was time for Turkey!
Break time... I know I promised shorter blogs but I can't help it!
